Embrigadés
Making people laugh, moving them, building suspense: there’s nothing better than experiencing, through art, the situations we want to prepare young people for.
Preventing radicalization leading to violence requires raising awareness among as many people as possible, especially young people. Raising awareness means not only informing people about a phenomenon, but above all getting them to think about it.
What better vehicle than artistic expression in general, and theatre in particular, to lead us to reflect inwardly on radicalization, hate and violent extremism? How else can we convey the intensity of what radicalism can be, other than through words or abstract reflection?
The play Embrigadés achieves the feat of addressing radicalization leading to violence with simplicity yet depth. Rooted in Québec’s reality, Embrigadés offers a cross-cutting look at radicalization leading to violence, which takes many faces and forms. Never moralizing, always educational, the play leads everyone to reflect in their own way on themes such as the search for an ideal, the quest for meaning or the desire for revenge.
It is therefore with great respect that we partnered with the collective Les Pentures to present this play, which we believe offers an accessible entry point for discussing with young people the issues they are exposed to: polarization, radicalization, hate and violence.
A companion to the play Embrigadés, this teaching guide will help you better contextualize what radicalization leading to violence is, the logic and mechanisms of the phenomenon, and the issues related to it; it also offers ideas for preparing or extending the discussion with your students, debating radicalization with them and answering the questions the play will have raised.
