Small illustrated guide to hate

An educational, interactive and participatory glossary to recognize and understand hateful signs, symbols and expressions.

The mission of the Small Illustrated Guide to Hate in Québec is of course built around the central mission of the organization behind the initiative, Cities Without Violence, whose mission is to prevent violence by fostering harmonious and inclusive coexistence in society. It takes a community-based approach focused on accessibility for all, developed in concert with partners from every sector and grounded in both scientific and practical expertise, in order to act upstream of situations of radicalization leading to violence and hate-motivated acts.

The guide’s main objective is to classify hateful signs and symbols in the Québec context so that all citizens can:

  • recognize them visually
  • understand their meaning, message and references
  • link them to the underlying ideological positions
  • understand and distinguish the grounds of hate recognized under Canadian law
  • identify signs and symbols they may encounter in public spaces
