Environmental issues and ideological extremism: Collapsology, survivalism and eco-fascism

As the climate issue has become central in political, media and public spheres, it is also present within several extreme ideological movements. In recent years, we have seen environmental issues being ideologically co-opted by several forms of extremism.

This presentation first examines how extreme ideologies have a particular relationship with nature and with humanity’s relationship to it. It then presents certain movements in which the climate issue can be used to support exclusionary traditionalist views. In particular, this training explores this ideological co-optation within survivalist and eco-fascist movements.
